Remineralizing Powder

Do-Right Solar offers its own house-blend of mineral salts for remineralizing distilled water.  Remineralization serves three purposes:

  1. There is some anectodal and epidemiological evidence that drinking pure distilled water can deprive the body of minerals. This may or may not be true, and is a contentious topic, but since nothing negative has been noted about mineralized water, to just be on the safe side you may want to remineralize pure distilled water before drinking it.
  2. Distilled water tastes like nothing, which is actually a pleasant change from tap water, but adding minerals will give a very slight taste to the water.
  3. If the distilled water is stored in a vessel that is not completely inert, then it will slowly leach material from the vessel’s surface. Remineralizing the distilled water decreases this occurrence. It is still advisable, though, to store and serve water in glass or stainless steel containers, for the highest purity.

Do-Right Solar has created a blend of calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate (“bath salt”), and sodium chloride (“table salt”), all food-grade quality. The table salt chosen is Pink Himalayan Salt, which is sodium chloride with trace minerals.

When 1.5 tsp of this blend is added to 3 gallons of distilled water, the resultant remineralized water will have 50 ppm calcium, 30 ppm magnesium, 26 ppm sodium, 120 ppm sulfate, and 129 ppm chloride, with trace amounts of other minerals.

The 1.5 tsp amount of minerals gives a Total Hardness (TH) of 245 on the equivalent Ca-Carbonate scale, which is considered “very hard” water. By adding smaller amounts, different degrees of TH levels can be achieved. For example, 1 tsp = 163 TH (“hard”), 1/2 tsp = 82 TH (“moderately hard”), and 1/4 tsp = 41 TH (“soft”).
